1 out of 5 stars Beware the Sony Battery Life   September 7, 2010
Mary M. (TULSA, OKLAHOMA, US)
A few years ago Sony was sued in a class action for the poor longevity of the battery in laptops it sold. One would think that Sony would clean up its act and produce a reasonable laptop battery. At least I did. That combined with my die-hard devotion to Sony prompted me to purchase my VAIO computer. I paid almost $1,000 for it. It worked okay at the beginning. But within the first few months, the left internal mouse ceased working along with another something that I do not recall now. Sony service came out, but the mouse problem was never fixed and still does not work. Shortly after the unsuccessful repair of my internal mouse, I noted reduced battery life. I did report it to Sony - twice. But Sony was undisturbed; the battery life was just under an hour and I was using it to surf the web (chalk it up to "It's your fault"). And so I endured... But as is the nature of inanimate objects, the battery life never improved. It continued to deteriorate. Now at less than two years of ownership, I get about 10 minutes of battery life out of my precious Sony VAIO. With performance like that I could have a desktop! For not much more than the cost of a replacement battery ($340), I can buy a new computer. So I am now in the market for a new laptop and it wll not be a Sony. Suffice it to say I would not recommend a Sony to anyone - except my worst enemy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazed at the Customer Service   July 23, 2010

I didn't buy this laptop through Amazon, but I feel like I need to complement Sony somewhere. I bought this laptop about six months ago and three days ago when I turned it on there was a bizarre red blotch on the screen. It hadn't been damaged. I called customer care expecting to get a "it's out of warranty" response, but instead they told me a service technician would call me within three days and schedule a visit within 10 business days. On the second day the service tech called and asked if he could come by now for in home service. I'm in a big city so there's probably a lot of service techs here. The screen was replaced, not a cent out of my pocket, and no less than one phone call. I'm totally amazed by this!!!

The laptop is not bad either. :) Quick boot up, nice screen, I like the Sony quality and that's why I chose it from other laptops. But the kicker is, had this happened with another company I probably would have ended up paying something for the repair or taking it and leaving it somewhere for a few days. I'm so glad I spend the extra money.

4 out of 5 stars Love this VAIO Laptop   June 17, 2010

My last three laptops were HP, and this time I wanted to explore other manufacturers. I liked the design and tech specification for this SONY laptop and decided to buy. I have had this for the last 6 months and love every bit of it. I use it primarily for study and research, and the best things I love about this laptop are:

1- That it doesn't heat up on your laps, a problem I have had with my previous laptops.
2- Runs efficiently.
3- Very good at multitasking.
4- Additional SONY software are awesome.

I have had no issues with this laptop so far, but one thing I would liked to see on this laptop is the ability to receive more than two media card, because I have a Fuji digital camera which uses xD media card which this laptop doesn't support. The delivery was prompt and as advertised.

1 out of 5 stars A piece of garbage   May 28, 2010
Robert Blakeslee
I've been buying laptops since 1995, and I have yet to see a more bugged, lousy piece of equipment. The touch pad left click button needs about 10 pounds of force to make it work, I've never seen anything like it. The computer constantly crashes, and since I have another laptop with the same Windows 7 operating system which never has crashed on me, I know it's the Sony computer. DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER, I WISH I NEVER HAD!!!

1 out of 5 stars Laptop failed after 5 months and Sony charged $200 to repair   May 8, 2010
Amazon Shopper (Woodside, CA)
The laptop is pretty and works ably... while it lasts.

Unfortunately, mine had a catastrophic failure after just five months. It suffered a complete harddrive failure without having been dropped or mistreated, so it was just a poor quality product on Sony's part.

To add insult to injury, I took it to a Sony repair shop to be fixed since it was obviously still under warranty, but was told it would set me back another $200 if I wanted my data recovered. I routinely back up my data, but hadn't gotten around to it yet since it was only five months old. So Sony had effectively told me that I would have to pay an additional $200 on top of the $800 I had already paid just months earlier to have my laptop returned to the same condition it was in before it failed due to their own poor quality.

My advice: there are plenty of other laptops to choose from that treat their customers better and make better quality products that don't fail within months of purchase. I learned my lesson and will never be buying another Sony Vaio again.
